Round 6’s In the Spotlight looks at English International defender Geva Mentor from the Adelaide Thunderbirds. Mentor and her teammates are currently on a four game winning streak with the average winning margin being 18.25 points whilst only conceding on average 38.25 points. With early to mid season form like this, a Thunderbirds second consecutive grand final appearance is very achievable.

Geva Mentor, the Thunderbirds’ goal defender, has played all six games this season. She is surely looking forward to their bye this week.

Mentor features in the key defender statistical categories, and she is currently an impressive second in deflections for the season with 37 which included five in Round 5 and an average of 6.2 per game.

While generating the team high of 37 deflections so far for the season, Mentor’s Intercept numbers have really improved from 2009. Mentor currently has 14 to her name which is sixth for the competition. Last season Mentor only took 13 intercepts for the season in a total of 16 games.

Mentor currently sits fourth for season rebounds with 22, six in Round 6 and 3.6 on average per game.

With a season average of 12 penalties conceded, Mentor gave up her average in Round 6. For a defender always in the action Mentor has only given away four turnovers for the entire season and has conceded turnovers in only three matches (Round 1 – 1, Round 4 – 2, Round 6 – 1).

With one of the Thunderbirds key defenders showing early season statistical form, Adelaide will no doubt feature at the back end of the 2010 ANZ Championship season if these numbers continue.
