Game Report:

Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel opened the 2009 ANZ Championship with a polished first-up 55-46 win over Central Pulse in Invercargill today.

Steel, with eight current or former Silver Ferns at their disposal, held the edge throughout against a competitive Pulse. There was some opening game rustiness in evidence from both teams but by the final quarter, the southerners were beginning to show glimpses of the classiness they possess.

Former Sting favourites Adine Wilson and Donna Wilkins were welcomed back to the fold by an enthusiastic home crowd for their first taste of trans-Tasman netball after time out to join the ranks of motherhood.

The former Silver Ferns duo was quick to leave an imprint with Wilson showing good speed and sharp release on attack while Wilkins was a dominant figure in the Steel shooting circle.

With a strong injection of experienced talent for this year’s competition, particularly on defence, the Steel had the luxury of leaving Silver Ferns Katrina Grant and Wendy Telfer on the bench for the start. Both made appearances in the second half.

With only three back from last year, the young Pulse team put recent troubles behind them with a plucky start as they went toe-to-toe with their much-vaunted southern rivals through the first quarter. A late surge gave the Steel a 13-10 lead at the first break.

Pulse were forced to work hard to penetrate the tight defensive screen set by Sheryl Scanlan, who was a strong presence for her new team, and Megan Hutton in their shooting circle.

Unruffled by the attention, young shooters Paula Griffin and Jamilah Gupwell, on the back of patient build-ups from their attackers, kept their poise under the hoop to ensure the Pulse stayed in contention. Hard-nosed Pulse defender Cushla Lichtwark and her opposite Wilkins had a running battle throughout with no quarter given.

With their greater resources and ability to pressure turnovers, Steel had eased out to a five-goal buffer to lead 27-22 at halftime. Steel coach Robyn Broughton’s key message for the second half was to keep nailing the turnovers. But it was Pulse who made the more constructive start, their patience paying off as they narrowed the gap to two goals.

However, the Steel’s relentless pressure on defence, slick play on attack and the finishing skills of Wilkins and Daneka Wipiiti ensured the home team always held the upper hand.

Pulse’s shape fell away in the latter stages of the quarter as their ball supply dried up. Taking full advantage, Steel extended their lead out to eight goals for a handy 41-33 score going into the final 15 minutes.

Pulse lacked the necessary firepower to break the shackles in the final quarter as Steel marched on. Greater experience in all areas of the court enabled them to dominate a plucky first-up showing from the youthful Pulse team.

Defensively Steel made Pulse work overtime for openings while their speed on attack, when it clicked, was impressive.

Pulse worked hard throughout with Griffin, Gupwell, tireless wing attack Ngarama Milner-Olsen and Lichtwark showing plenty of potential.
