On Sunday afternoon, the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel will attempt to do what no other team has been able to do in the history of the ANZ Championship Finals Series – beat The Coffee Club Queensland Firebirds on their home court.
It’s a daunting task – made even more so by the dominant display of netball the Firebirds produced against the NSW Swifts in the Australian Conference Final.
But the Steel won’t be backing away from the challenge and are ready to face it head on according to midcourter Gina Crampton.
“We live to fight another day,” Crampton said.
“We have to keep the confidence if we’re going to do it.
“There’s no point going over there and being shy about it - it’ll be exciting.
“We’ll believe in ourselves, keep the confidence in training and take it to them.”
Although disappointed by their performance against the Cold Power Magic in the New Zealand Conference Final, Crampton says they took plenty from the match.
“It was disappointing for us; we had a slow start,” she said.
“I’m proud that we did come back into it and draw even.
“But it’s the little stuff that we’ll aim to clean up against the Firebirds; we need to cherish the ball, get turnovers and when we do get them - score of it.
The Steel will travel to Brisbane to take on the Firebirds in the Australian-hosted Semi-Final on Sunday 24 July. Fans can catch all the action live on SKY Sport NZ and FOX SPORTS Australia from 12pm (local time).
The winner of this match will progress through to the ANZ Championship Grand Final on Sunday 31 July.
