Roselee Jencke will lead The Coffee Club Queensland Firebirds to their fourth consecutive Grand Final, and has an opportunity to become the only ANZ Championship coach to go back-to-back.
A victory would also see the Firebirds become the only ANZ Championship team to win three titles, with Jencke the only coach to lead a team to three Grand Final wins.
The head coach boasts the highest winning percentage of all ANZ Championship coaches across the nine years of the league, with a 74 per cent winning record.
Jencke sees similarities between her current team and the title-winning 2011 team, captained by Lauren Nourse.
“There are similar qualities from the 2011 team, it was a really formidable team then and it was last year too. We had all the ingredients then, we had all the ingredients last year,” Jencke said.
“We’ve got this big challenge ahead of us on Sunday and only time will tell if we can replicate what we’ve done in previous years, we’re working really hard to do that.
“You can talk all you want about it but it’s about getting out on court and performing.”
According to Jencke, a key success of the Firebirds has been their ability to grow and evolve their team culture.
“I’m really proud of the culture that we’ve been able to build from 2010 right through until this day,” she explained.
“What we’ve set up in 2010 and 2011 has been able to carry us through to the present. We’ve built on what the previous Birdies have been able to instil in the new Birdies coming through. That’s something that we’re really pleased with here at the Firebirds.”
In a repeat of last year’s Grand Final, the Queenslanders are preparing for a close battle with the NSW Swifts in Brisbane.
“There were a couple of patches against Steel that we felt we let ourselves down in and we will need to make sure that we do better,” Jencke said.
“We’ll need to make sure we have every base covered and every combination covered so that we are prepared for whoever the Swifts might put out on court.”
The Firebirds will host the Swifts in the 2016 ANZ Championship Grand Final at Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Sunday July 31. The game will be broadcast live on Channel 10 (ONE in WA), Fox Sports Australia, Sky Sport NZ and the Netball Live App.
